Craigslist is an Online Community website where people communicate with each other through free classifieds advertisements, in a format similar to the classifieds section of a newspaper. Craigslist is a strong example of Commons-based peer production.

Background[]

Craigslist was founded in 1995 by Craig Newmark, to service the San Fransisco bay area. The number of areas that Craigslist accommodates has steadily grow, starting in 2000 when the site expanded to 9 other United States cities. As of September, 2007, Craigslist's number of accommodated cities rests at about 450 cities throughout 50 countries.

While the majority of Craigslist classifieds advertisements are free, fees are required when posting paid job ads listed in 9 major US cities (New York City, San Fransisco, Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, San Diego, Seattle, Washington D.C., and Portland). This serves as Craigslist's sole source of revenue for the company's operational costs and wages for its 24 employees.
