What's new, new media?

Numerical Representation, is the digital code representation of all new media objects that are either created on computers or converted from analog media sources. The term originates from Lev Manovich's 2001 book The Language of New Media. Manovich describes the two key consequences of Numerical Representation. The first, that new media objects are able to be described mathematically, and the second consequence, that new media objects are subject to algorithmic manipulation.
