A virtual world is a non-real environment in which representations of spatial properties are preserved for metaphorical purposes. Although the representation of physical space in reference to the internet is akin to the "horseless carriage," the metaphor maintains a powerful hold whose grip is loosening as you no longer hear about "Chat Rooms" or "Virtual Reality."
