The World Wide Web Consortium, or WC3 is an organization dealing in the standards of the World Wide Web. These tools developed and maintained by WC3 enable HTML/CSS code standards that create a consistency in the content of any given web page across different web browsers. W3C also has educational programs, develops software, and also serves as an open forum for discussion about the Web. WC3 is currently headed by Sir Tim Berners-Lee.

Examples of WC3 Standards Edit

  • the Uniform Resource Identifier (URI), also know as URL or Universal Resource Locater, which is a universal system for referencing resources on the Web, such as Web pages;
  • the HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP), which specifies how the browser and server communicate with each other; and
  • the HyperText Markup Language (HTML), used to define the structure and content of hypertext documents.
